• Release of a refurbished Technics RS-1506 for sale!

  • About the machine

You are looking at a Technics RS-1506 tape deck from the Japanese domestic market. It is known that these machines have better components than the ones for export purpose, and the decks operates at 100VAC. A quality 100VAC step down transformer will be provided according to your location voltage, as well as a brand new Recording The Masters SM911 tape.

    Cosmetic condition: 9.5/10

The cosmetic condition is excellent, with wood side panels and aluminum selector switches. There are  light signs of time here and there.

    This deck is fully refurbished:

    • All parts and boards were cleaned, all potentiometers, switches and internal plugs were restored with contact cleaner
    • All electrolytic capacitors were replaced (about 140 units) by high quality ones: ELNA SILMIC II, Nichicon Super Through (power supply), and Nichicon Muse KZ
    • The 4 heads were relapped (original head curve shape restored and polished), so they perform better than new ones
    • Brake pads were changed by felt/cork pads for better grip

This deck is fully calibrated according to the service manual:

    • Pressure rollers and cue lever
    • Brakes
    • Tape tension, tape guides, capstan motor control circuitry
    • Heads alignment (height, contact, tangency, and of course azimuth
    • Recording level, meters level
    • Erase current, bias current leakage (REC and Line Out), dummy coil
    • Bias current, recording equalization, and overall gain

The deck is calibrated at 250 nWb/m with recording bias set for SM911 tape (position 2 on bias selector).

  • Head relapping explanation:

  • Magnetic heads: ah yes, those small blocks of metal with wires sticking out the back are probably, inch for inch, the most expensive real estate on your tape recorder.

Because of the intricate role magnetic heads play in the overall operation and quality of a tape recorder, optimum performance must be achieved in manufacture and maintained in the field. The very nature of the tape transporting process involves wear in one form or another. During this process, an abrasive, flexible material (magnetic tape) is pulled across a relatively soft or an extremely hard and brittle non-moving material (magnetic head) with sufficient wrap and tension to insure intimate continuous contact. The inevitable result is...wear!

As a magnetic head wears in normal operation, certain conditions and minor problems develop which indicate a gradual deterioration in performance. These indications include: slight loss of high frequency response, signal amplitude instability, overall loss of level, unstable tracking and tape path, distorted signal, and excessive oxide build-up.

Generally these symptoms can be attributed to an uneven change in contour due to wear, or in the case of ferrite, gap deterioration caused by material erosion. The change in performance is usually very slight; it can be normally compensated for by adjusting record or playback equalization and mechanical head alignment. As the wearing continues, however, a point is reached in which the acceptable performance cannot be achieved by compensation or adjustment. Studies show that in most cases, less that 50% of the depth of the gap has worn at this stage. As a result, proper relapping will restore an unserviceable magnetic head to its original performance specifications.
